The Principe Pio shopping center will host its seventh annual book fair – VII Feria del Libro – everyday until the 3rd of May. The book fair offers something for everyone, whether you want to brush up on your Harry Potter knowledge before the final film, improve your Spanish, find out more about the Civil War or grab a great antique souvenir. Take your time with your current read and visit the fair on the 27th of April when all books are 10 percent off.The fair, which attracts vendors, authors, literary buffs and bargain hunters from around the area, is open Monday through Friday from 10h to 22h and Sundays and holidays (including Semana Santa and the 1st of May) from 11h to 22h.

The Centro Commercial de Príncipe Pio is located next to the Príncipe Pio Station on Metro lines 6, 10 and R and can be reached by the 25, 33, 39, 41, 46, 75 and 138 buses.

Cheap Original Version Films Six Days a Week

Every day except Mondays and holidays, the 90-year-old Cine Doré hosts the Filmoteca Española, a government funded program to bring great movies new and old to Madrid. Each film costs 2.50 € and a ten-film pass (abono) is just 20€. The Filmoteca typically offers four movies per night for diverse tastes and from various eras. All are shown in their original version with subtitles. This month, the program honors directors David Cronenberg, Alain Cavalier, Miguel Delibes, Antonio Ozores and Miguel Gato.On Tuesday, the 12th of April, the Filmoteca presents:

Rabid, a 1979 Canadian film directed by Cronenberg, at 17:30h

A series of films including O herdeiro, L’Atalante and two short documentaries directed by acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Gato, who died last November, at 19h

El disputado voto del señor Cayo, a 1986 Spanish film directed by Delibes, at 20h

And finally, La Chamada, El amor es un extraño juego, a 1968 French film by Cavalier, at 22h

The ticket window opens at 16:15h and Cine Doré has a cafeteria for movie-marathoners who need a caffeine or sugary boost between films. Moviegoers are also able to suggest films for future months.

The theater is located at C/ Santa Isabel, 3 between the Antón Martín, Tirso de Molina and Lavapiés Metro stations. It can also be reached by the 6, 26, 32 and 57 buses.

Allison of Guiri Guide chats to Us

Allison writes for the Guiri Guide to Madrid, an online guide of honest views and thorough insight to help you successfully navigate through your move to Madrid. She landed in Madrid about 8 months ago with her husband. The reason for their move from California is that her husband is earning an MBA here in Madrid. This is not Allison’s first time in Madrid though, as she came to Spain about 7 years ago on a university study programme. Her perspective on Madrid has since changed a bit; she used to think that Madrileños were all about partying, but her second time around has shown her that they also enjoy some serious downtime with friends and family. While she isn’t yet fluent in Spanish, she speaks enough to get around and encourages everyone living in Madrid to learn as much as they can about the language and culture.

Here follows our chat:

Q:What big differences and changes did you experience after you arrived in Madrid:A:Schedules: I had to come to term with the fact that every day 3 hours are pushed forward.1pm is still morning and 8pm is the afternoon. There is no use in waking up early to do administrative chores because banks, pharmacies, post offices, and most shops don’t open until 9 or 10am.

Secondly, the lack of tumble dryers took me by surprise. It was quite a shock to realise that an apartment in Madrid did not necessarily come with a tumble dryer, or even an oven in some cases! I think the habit of hanging clothes on the line over patios and between building windows is quite amusing.

Q:Habits you have come to adopt?

A:Coffee (laughs).Here in Madrid having coffee is much more social. I can’t go through a day without at least one cup.

Q: 5 Facts every Guiri needs to know before arriving in Madrid?

A:1)Things/services take longer: supermarkets, paperwork, contracts…do yourself a favour and put in some buffer time to complete administrative chores.

2)Reach out and build a community of friends. This will enhance the experience of living here. Living abroad can be tough, you will need friends to help you through it!

3)Not everyone speaks English. Learn at least some basic Spanish, enough to report a stolen wallet, setup an internet connection, or order from a menu in a restaurant.

4)Watch your wallet, especially in the famous Sunday market El Rastro, in the metro, or even in Starbucks.(I’m sure the mention of this last location, Starbucks, will surprise many. Allison related an incredible story of how a friend of hers was having a coffee in a Madrid Starbucks when she caught a woman pulling a wallet from her bag, and upon being caught all she said was “lo siento: – sorry. To that one can only say, Que morro!(What a nerve!))

5) There is no reasonably priced peanut butter in Madrid. A small jar of peanut butter costs 6 Euros. If you can stock up before arriving, do. (Allison admits she has gone without peanut butter during her time in Madrid,…she is craving it but will resist the price exploitation here)

Q:3 things you miss about home…Los Angeles:

A: Living close to the beach. We used to really enjoy beach life and spending a lot of time outdoors. I also miss my shopping experience at Target (one stop shopping!) It’s just not the same with hypermarkets here. And last but not least…peanut butter!

Q:Recommended English Services in Madrid:

A:Spain Select. – A rental service company offering short and long term rentals all over Spain. Their services are in English and their treatment of clients is very professional. Their apartment units are beautiful and comfortable.

Q: How is your Spanish?

A: Functional, I am taking classes still. I also learned some colloquial expressions while my husband and I walked the Camino de Santiago this past August .

Q: Was it easy to make friends in Madrid?

A: Well, personally I was lucky because I sort of had built-in-friends as a result of my husband’s MBA programme. The partners of the MBA students are able to connect and friendships naturally develop. I’ve also made some nice friends through my church here in Madrid. Having said that, I think it’s relatively easy to make friends in Madrid. Madrileños are a pretty friendly and open people, and they love to be social. The other day I went out for coffee with my husband and we could not find one table free in our neighbourhood! All the cafes were filled with tables of friends, talking and laughing. No one likes to stay stuck in the house.

Exhibit of Hungarian Master Photographer

On the occasion of the Hungarian Presidency of the European Union, Hungarian curator Peter Baki has organised an exposition of over 100 of André Kertész’s most iconic photographs. These classic works offer a chronological journey through the three most important stages of this pioneering artist’s career: Hungary, France and the United States. Experts agree that Hungary was one of the most important focal points of photography between the 2 World Wars, with world-renowned artists such as André Kertész [Andor Kertész], László Moholy-Nagy, Brassaï [Gyula Halász] and Robert Capa [Endre Ernö Friedmann]. The exhibit is at the Fundación Carlos de Amberes on Claudio Coello 99 (Metro: Nuñez de Balboa L5-L9) until April 10th. The exhibit is free on Tuesdays, and costs 3 euros Wednesdays-Sundays (closed Mondays). There are guided tours on Thursdays and Fridays at 17.00 and at 19.00. Giggling Guiri Brings Lee Camp to Madrid

The Giggling Guiri crew, is massively excited to present what may be the comedy event of the year! Lee Camp, a young and prolific comedian, who also happens to be a contributor for The Onion and Huffington Post. Among his comedy scene trophies he counts his appearance on Comedy Central, MTV, E! Network, PBS, ABC and was notoriously thrown out of FoxNews’ studios after questioning their journalistic integrity.Lee is stopping in Madrid en route to Glasgow’s rapidly growing comedy fest to premiere his new CD, Chaos for the Weary. This means that if you are in Madrid on the 20th of March you would be glad not to miss his show. Free Short Films at Circulo de Bellas Artes

“Eugeni Forcano-Mi Barcelona” Photo Exposition

A new exhibit of 650 photos of Barcelona from the 1960s has just opened. The extraordinary photos were donated to the Photographic Archive of Barcelona by the talented photographer Eugeni Forcani. His vivid photographs focus on the people of Barcelona at a very specific time in its history. Of all the photographers who have portrayed Barcelona over the years, this self-taught artist has been one of the photographers who has shown the most interest in capturing its citizens and their behavior.The exposition, which runs until April 8, is held at Madrid’s Centro Cultural Blanquerna (c/ Alcalá, 44 Metro: Banco de España L2). It will be open Monday through Friday from 10:30 to 21:30 and Saturdays from 10:30 to 20:30. This event is free.

2 Free Art Exhibits

“Vórtices” is an exhibition with six newly created installations. The artist Canogar Daniel reflects on the water, the water cycle, sustainability and recycling. The title of this exhibition refers to the “huge whirlpool of garbage in the Pacific Ocean”- the largest landfill on Earth formed by debris floating on water. The exhibit is open weekdays and holidays from 11:00 to 20:00, and closed Wednesdays after 15:00. The exhibit runs until April 10 at Fundación Canal (Mateo Inurria, 2 Metro: Plaza Castilla L1-L9-L10). This event is free. At the same time, the sala de exposiciones del Canal de Isabel II (Santa Engracia, 125. Metro: Alonso Cano L7) hosts “Travesías”, a video exhibit which was originally created for the atrium of the European Union Justus Lipsius building in Brussels, where it was exhibited from January to June 2010, coinciding with the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.

Free Concert-Marta Sanchez & Chenoa

Communidad de Madrid and Metro Madrid are sponsoring a free concert of top female pop music artists in Madrid,Marta Sanchez of the very popular song En tus Manos with the Venezualan Carlos Baute,Chenua and Tamara.The only reason,the artists name Tamara is not in the title is because there was no room.Point taken,all three artists are great perfomers and are worth attendance.Tickets can be collected from Metro Nuevos Ministerios (Line 10) of the 3rd of March from 4pm till 8pm.The festival is called Creadoras and it is a homenage to women held to coincide with the International Day of the Working Woman,on March 8th.Only 2 entrances per person will be handed out.The concerts are as follows:
